Following Southampton's metamorphosis from a team that could easily have been mistaken for Barcelona on Saturday against Leeds into mid-table 'also-rans' at home to Swindon tonight, I decided to investigate this infuriating pattern that has been a mainstay of United's time in League One.
Its been said for months now that teams raise their game when Leeds United are in town or when lower league players get the opportunity to play in the relative splendour of Elland Road. Its easy to pass these comments off as a cliché or arrogance from a team 'living in the past', struggling to accept reality of life in English football's third teir. So as Southampton became the latest victim of 'The Leeds United Effect' lets see if this myth has any substance...
It turns out that of the 32 opponents Leeds United have faced this season in all competitions (51 matches) only 3 teams have managed to back up 'their cup final' performance by winning their next two league games! Colchester, Norwich and Brighton are the only clubs to keep their season on track following a fixture with Leeds. Astonishingly of the 8 teams that have recorded victory over The Whites this term, only two (Liverpool and Millwall) have backed it up with victory in their next league game. Moreover, Exeter City haven't won a single game since beating Leeds 2-0 back in January and Huddersfield Town have recorded 3 straight defeats since their almighty effort in the recent 2-2 draw at The Galpharm.
Hopefully we can escape this 'tin-pot' league with its 'tin-pot' clubs in the not too distant future and play against clubs who see Leeds United as just another fixture instead of playing like Brazil, in the carnival atmosphere that inevitably grips the Towns and Cities Leeds visit.
All this for a team that was once famous...

maybe just maybe swindon are good? but then again we only beat you 3-0 at our place. we are coming for second place you arrogant northern twat
ReplyDeleteYeah and that attitude is EXACTLY why you're still in this league and why you might well be in it next season too.
ReplyDeleteSTFC
That attitude is EXACTLY why you're still in this league and why you might well be in it next season too!
ReplyDeleteAgree with Mex we are coming for that second place. We're not satisfied with the play offs. We're looking upwards not down.
Great blog. Some really good points made. Apart from what those Swindon (who?) twats have had to say. Enjoy your upcoming day out at Elland Rd - it'll be your last visit to a top class stadium for at least the next 10 years.
ReplyDeleteleeds are wank. you came to st marys and gave nothing. its taken us just this season to already begin to contend and if it wasn't for the points deduction and the fact that we had no pre-season (and therefore a bad start to the season) we would in the play-off mix, with you once again in there and destroying your chances of escaping a league you trully belong in.
ReplyDeleteYour fans (and even they're not that great) are the only things keeping you going.
We'll be up next season. You're in your 3rd season and to be honest there's a pretty good chance you won't go up. if you drop into those play-offs you're completely fucked. leeds are average, wake-up. lucky at elland road. and if it wasn't for the assistance of your 12th man (the ref), we would have had a few more against you
er to the southampton tosser, if it wasnt for the points deduction you would have 57 points and we would have 71 points...so take a large dose of reality, enjoy your 2nd season in League 1 and see you in the Premiership in a few years.
ReplyDeleteSouthampton twat you forget you are talking to the team who made points deductions what they are today. We would have been out of league 1 automatically in our first season in league 1 and got into the playoffs anyway with ease (before bottling it!). And for the record we signed half our team the week before the season started but we still got rid of our 15 points deduction in 5 games...
ReplyDeleteAs for fans you seem to be just about averaging over 20,000 a game so one cup final against the biggest club in the league(on terrible form) doesn't define fans. Come back when your averaging 24,000 a game in your third season because I seem to remember us averaging 28,000 a game In our first season in this shit league.(better than 7 or 8 premier league clubs.
Once again, twat
Swindon have lost 9 times this season in all competitions, 2 of those games have gone to penalties and we've lost on those.
ReplyDeleteAstonishingly of those 9 occasions, Norwich are the only team to go and win more than one consecutive game following their victory over us (in fact this run includes another win against us, on penalties though). Wolves are the other team to win just one fixture after beating us on penalties.
Your stats prove fuck all, as do the stats I've quoted here. I could equally and falsely argue that teams have been raising their game against us because we're their cup final and post some ridiculous statistic to prove a ridiculous point. Leagues are decided by the number of points you accumulate in that season, not on past exploits. Everyone wants you to bottle it yet again because your 'divine right' to be in a higher division is in fact completely cuntish.
Oh and Elland Road, world class stadium? Not even the best stadium in the division. We are the champions, champions of egos.
Remind me again how many back-to back wins you have had since you raised your game to beat Manchester United? This blog should surely be titled "Leeds - The latest victims of the Manchester United Effect"
ReplyDeleteYou can only escape this "tin pot" league by being better than the "Tin Pot" clubs in it. Right now your team of over-rated tripe are playing on the same level. Lots of fans does not equate to a superior team.
"Remind me again how many back-to back wins you have had since you raised your game to beat Manchester United? This blog should surely be titled "Leeds - The latest victims of the Manchester United Effect""
ReplyDeleteLOL. SO true and you know it Leeds.
You've rattled a few cages as usual, funny how if Leeds are so crap we still enrage so many fans of clubs (of all shapes and sizes), who trawl the net for news about Leeds:
ReplyDeletethey know we are Leeds and they don't like it.
In my next post I was thinking of looking at who each League One club was playing when they recorded their top attendance this season...
ReplyDeleteLeeds United is the big kid you remember from your class at primary school with the chubby arms and runny nose. He couldn't quite hack it in the same class as the other kids his age, so the teachers kept him back a few years.
ReplyDeleteThe funny thing is that the big kid thinks all of his new classmates idolise him...because he's big. But the truth is - they pity him. Humour him, take the piss on occasions. They all know he should really be a couple of years ahead. And in reality, they think his misplaced opinion of himself is quite endearing.
The blog entry above is the best exercise in self-delusion I've read in a long time. I can only hope that Leeds United's players and management suffer the same inflated opinion of themselves as some of your club's fans clearly do...because that will only play in to the hands of Swindon Town and the rest of the pack of clubs now snapping at Leeds' heels.
Perhaps one of the most deluded and arrogant opinions I have ever read.
ReplyDeleteIf your that big and the rest are tinpot why can't you hold a league one match at 3pm on a saturday against Millwall ?
Souhampton = Just a small town near Portsmouth
ReplyDeleteSwindon who?
All you small time clubs can bitch about the mighty Leeds but at the end of the day, we are above you in the league! Nuff said wankers
"If your that big and the rest are tinpot why can't you hold a league one match at 3pm on a saturday against Millwall?"
ReplyDelete- Erm, Because it's been chosen to be broadcast on Sky!! (At least our 9th game this season to be chosen for live broadcast)
Haha, fuking idiot Swindon fans. "we beat you 3-0" blah blah blah. You brought the DVD out yet? All this is pointless anyway until the end of the season when the best team will be highest. Simple as that.
ReplyDeleteAll i know is i know which position i'd rather be in - 2nd place, 5 points ahead, much better goal difference and 10 games to go. Also only Norwich and Swindon are the only top 6 teams we have left to play in the next few matches (We will hopefully be up by the time we play Charlton).
After we beat Millwall at our place on Monday that is!
ReplyDelete"Swindon who?
ReplyDeleteThe team that dicked you 3-0 and who may well beat you to second.
Fuckwit."
Again, I said Swindon who??? You do realise you have to play us at home.Won't be so cocky after that match will you? Cockbreath
hahaha, didnt realise thay made em so thick in Swindon. Just so you know, this is the current league table:
ReplyDeleteNorwich 36 39 78
Leeds United 36 32 71
Charlton 36 19 66
Swindon 36 12 66
Now i know you probably struggled with maths but here goes. 71 - 66 = 5
That means you're 5 points behind Leeds. It may as well be 6 with our dramatically better GD.
Anything else i need to re-read? lol
As a Leeds fan I can't stand articles like this.
ReplyDeleteHistory means nothing, past glory means absolutely squat and promotions are not decided by stadium size or bums on seats but points. With both Swindon and Millwall snapping at our heals we need to buck our ideas up if we are to avoid risking another play off campaign, yet some idiots still go on as though we have a god given right to be handed 3 points every game. Swindon and Millwall are a real threat to us because they have good squads, good managers and are in good form. I would not like to meet either in the playoffs either.
People like this are the type to get on the teams back too much and exert too much pressure. People like this are one of the reasons that we are in this league and might find ourselves still here next season.
Get real pal, we are here because we deserve to be here and can only get out of this league on merit.
It's third tier.
ReplyDelete"play against clubs who see Leeds United as just another fixture instead of playing like Brazil"
Bet you loved comparing yourself to Brazil there. If you go up, I don't think you will enjoy yourselves because you won't be the 'big club' which you've come to see yourselves as over the last few seasons - you'll be just as average as the rest of them and Leeds fans won't like that.
I'm looking forward to the Easter Saturday game at Elland Road, hopefully we'll have the points to overtake you that day.
STFC til I die!
nice to see we are attracting so much attention. leeds leeds leeds.
ReplyDeleteto be honest you deluded northern prick thats the attitude that keeps you in this division,i hope one of us gets out this division cause were sick of the flat caps, cravates, flares and the overwhelming smell of whippet shit once a year.
ReplyDeleteI'm Leeds. I'm scared.
ReplyDeleteBut not that scared.

ReplyDeleteThe word you are looking for is "years" not "months".
And "relative splendour" should read "cavernous, dilapidated emptiness".
Yeah leeds are 5 points clear of swindon but leeds are in shit form what is it 3 wins in 13 hahahahah thats laughable!!!! i really hope leeds balls it up AGAIN and hope swindon come up with us (the mighty norwich) coz after all "WE ALL HATE LEEDS SCUM" enjoy your stay in league 1 dirty leeds! come on swindom break little leeds hearts again haha
ReplyDeleteWE ARE TOP THE LEAGUE!!!!!!
NCFC 4 LIFE
"Dirty Leeds said...
ReplyDeleteIn my next post I was thinking of looking at who each League One club was playing when they recorded their top attendance this season..."
I think you'll be surprised by how many aren't Leeds actually! You don't even have the highest average attendances at home - Norwich do...who also happen to be above you in the table. As for Southampton....they played brilliantly against Norwich in each of the 3 matches we played them this season and we've only got a point off them so your arguments are massively flawed. Swindon and Millwall are both currently better than Leeds and you just hate to admit it.
we've had some great moments this season, but watching leeds capitulate over recent months has been a definite highlight. almost hope we lose to swindon on saturday just to see what deluded nonsense you lot come up with next.
ReplyDelete(note i said 'almost' there).
your boys are going to get absolutely destroyed at carrow road next weekend.
OTBC
"we'll never play you again".
ReplyDeleteNCFC
Of the 18 away games Leeds have played this season 14 of them have been record crowds for the home team. You can add Norwich to that too next week, that was sold out weeks ago!
ReplyDeleteCant hear any leeds now the best team in the league is about!!!!! if swindon beat you lot the form you are in you better be worried!!!!!!! a loss against swindon and a nailed on loss at carrow road means swindon could pick those 5 points up no problem at all and you will not win the playoffs!!! current form says millwall will !! oh how you lot would love that!!!
ReplyDeletencfc
you lot are muppets. look the fact of the matter is hat at the moment leeds are no better than the top three of four sides in the league and we know it.
ReplyDeleteHowever what we do know is that i we can get promoted we will have a far better chance of staying up and moving n to bigger and better things... a MUCH bette chanc than some of your teams would have.
And there you have it...we are not arrogant, cuntish northern wankers as you so charmingly call us....we are like you...we just support our team and want them to do well.
The only difference is I can guess there aren't many leeds fans spending their day commenting on blogs about southhampton, norwich or swindon. You hate us yet you fuel our ambition to leave you behind with your relentless, almost obsessive hatred of us. And you wonder why we laugh about you all. Tools

It might have sold out but it won't be a record crowd and won't be our highest attendance of the season. Leeds fans are dirty so we have to keep more empty seats between us and you than for other games which brings down the numbers. But if you need to go on thinking that Leeds are a massive club who the other 'tinpot' clubs fear then feel free.

ReplyDeleteThats hilarious! You clearly don't know how many Leeds fans used to come onto the Norwich message boards to brag and have a go at us. It has got a bit quieter recently but then I guess you've all realised you don't actually have that much to brag about.

ReplyDeleteAll the posts on The Pink'un are links from Waccoe. Obviously obsessed
The arrogance is astonishing. All season we've had to put up with mouthy twats like yourself spouting shit on Norwich message boards. You're now no more than a blip in our rear view mirror, and will be even more so when you get thumped at CR.
ReplyDeleteGood luck in the play-offs you mouth breathing Yorkshire tools.
WE ARE TOP O THE LEAGUE :)
ReplyDeletei cant believe dirty leeds have struggled in this leagure for so long! leicester go down and straight back up, we are close to doing the same thing but poor old little leeds are really struggling!!!!!!!! surly that just shows that your shit
mmwwahhahahahaha
Leeds 1 - 0 Norwich
ReplyDelete'The arrogance is astonishing. All season we've had to put up with mouthy twats like yourself spouting shit on Norwich message boards. You're now no more than a blip in our rear view mirror, and will be even more so when you get thumped at CR'
ReplyDeleteHmm...what message board are you posting on now...oh wait a minute its a Leeds one. Also...do you just go on the Norwich one to abuse Leeds fans...if so thats just plain sad.
Also...I might be a twat but less of the 'little'..thats just demeaning :-).
For the record Norwich are better than Leeds at the moment but whos bragging now? oh wait a minute its you. dangerous game that...things can go wrong very quickly.
Maybe giving this a go would be a good idea.
ReplyDeleteLeeds worry about Leeds
Norwich worry about Norwich
Swindon worry about Swindon.
Cant predict the outcome! Im 'dirty Leeds' as you so kindly put it....however if we are willing to throw away a 10 point lead at the top....frankly we deserve another year in league 1.
Look, it's quite simple.
ReplyDeleteBremner was not interfering with play and Lorimers goal in Paris 1975 was not offside. Furthermore, Clarke was clearly fouled by Beckenbauer and we should have won 2-0.
This makes Leeds United the uncrowned Kings of the Continent, and until this wrong is made right, then we remain the 'Champions of Europe' and the most feared and respected domestic football club in the World.
We are Leeds - Marching on Together.
Bloody hell, i didnt think Swindon had so many fans, im shocked
ReplyDeleteAnyway, we have hit the skids and arent playing well, but points on the board is still points on the board
Its in our hands and only we can fuck it up, for the record most Leeds fans see Millwall as the immeadiate danger, not Swindon (who we should dispatch easiy enough at Elland Road)we beat Millwall next Monday and we're almost there
I get a sense from reading some of the comments on here that quite a few little clubs will miss us next season should we go up and that Southampton fans need to go back to school and learn how to count
The horrible things for us Leeds fans is being such a big club we have had to endure your pitiful and one way hatred/jealousy of us for 3 years now, whereas if it werent for a stitched up Admin process by our less than ethical board, we would hve long since said goodbye to you and your nothing clubs, never to play you again
No - it was Leeds 2-1 Norwich. But its also Norwich P36 Pts 78 and Leeds P36 Pts 71
ReplyDeleteThere may be some truth in what you say. But the majority of clubs in this league have had 3 'cup finals' and are now thinking of you as equals, not betters. Youre slowly but surely sliding backwards, your big lead blown, and there are enough games left for at least one of Charlton, Colchester, Swindon & Millwall to overtake you
As for Norwich? Forget us, we're off out of this league in May back to the Championship as League 1 Champions. Leeds will still be playing their 46 cup finals in league 1 next time round
Why do we look at your message board? Cos we want to take the piss
Leeds United. Once big. Now crap
I have to interject here - "Once big, now crap"
ReplyDeleteI'd rather be once big than an eternal family club with your nice, friendly atmosphere and inflatable crowd toys and music when you score...
'Why do we look at your message board? Cos we want to take the piss'
ReplyDeleteGod you don't even realise it do you. Why is it important to take the piss out of leeds if we are so meaningless and pitiful. Coming on here is like crossing the street to kick a tramp that used to be an investment banker. If you do it...then its because you are still envious of what he used to have. Get OVER IT and concentrate on your own team.
Delia takes it up the batty, FACT
ReplyDeletesometimes teams do raise their games against more well known clubs and there are a few clubs in league one who could site this as something that has ensured for a harder season for them but Swindon are certainly not in that category.
ReplyDeleteSpeedy..
ReplyDeleteHave your day in the sun mate, we both know that you wont be above us forever
Once we get out of this tin pot league (that to be fair, neither of our clubs should be in) the skys the limit for us, you on the other hand, with no hope of international investment due to the fact that you're, well, nobodies basically, means The Championship is just about your level
In a few years we'll being saying goodbye to it too, back to our rightful home amongst English footballs elite
Keep the programmes from our games against each other to show the grand kids someday, tell them of the days when you were able to take Leeds United on as equals, they wont believe you, they will look at you funny, they will most probably nag their Mum to get you put into an old folks home citing severe dementia, but at least you'll know the truth
You're a Championship club not even as big as Ipswich, go hate Colchester, they too need a reason to exist
delia may well 'take it up the batty', but given a choice between her and bates...
ReplyDeleteyour 'rightful place' right now is second in league 1 and falling fast - just as ours is 7 points clear and looking uncatchable. is there a single leeds fan out there who thinks you'd stand a chance if you end up in the play-offs? and then what happens? beckford off, snodgrass off, becchio off, kisnorbo, grella, gradel...
it's ok though, you'll still have andy hughes (who wasn't good enough for norwich, by the way - though he'll get a warm reception at CR i'm sure).
if you don't manage to sneak second place this season (and i think you probably will), i would be surprised if there was a leeds v norwich league fixture in the next 5 years. i'll make sure i get an extra copy of the programme at next week's game and send it to you.

A decent comment, I can't disagree with any of it.
Norwich fans are as thick as mustard (Colman's to be precise)
ReplyDeleteAnd the ref was proven to be bent in Salonika in 1973...we should have won the Cup Winners Cup Final...even the Greeks in the crowd were chanting 'cheats' towards both the referee and the AC Milan side. - - Disgrace.
ReplyDeleteThere's some peculiar reaction here that is typical mainly to your average football fan, truly blinded by the love of their club and the hatred of others.
ReplyDeleteThe blogger blots his copy-book by being less than complimentary about other clubs in league one by calling them "tinpot". However, this doesn't detract from the crux of the question raised. Do clubs in league one raise there game to play Leeds?
Given that there are no other clubs in league one with the recent success of Leeds United's, no other club that was averaging 40, 000 crowds all but a few seasons ago and no club that was in the last 4 of the biggest club competition in the world last decade, it's a fair assumpttion to say that Leeds are a big fish in a small pond, a situation arrived at by events of the field more than on them.
It does, therefore, seem logical that there will be an extra vim in the play of teams facing Leeds, an extra sense of occaision, a scalp to be had. This is born out by the attandences, almost all of the leagues biggest attandences last season were against Leeds. The purpose of the blog though seems not to work on this assumption but to explore it with facts. It would appear that they have done a fair job of that and built a fairly reasonable picture up of a reocurring pattern.
It is a mirror of the effect that Leeds suffered with post Man United match and one which fits with human phychology as much as it does with an historical analysis.

ReplyDeleteYou have no need to send me any programmes mate, i have plenty from the likes of Milan, Barcelona, Real Madrid, PSV Eindhoven, Lazio, Roma, Valencia, etc etc (I could go on all day but your inferiority complex knows no bounds it would seem and i have no desire to add to it)
ReplyDeleteOur rightful place has never been and will never ever be League 1, we have been brought down to your level simply through bad financial management practised by a board who didnt know the meaning of 'longterm'
Thats why were are were we are, had that not have happened we would still be in the top 6/8 in our rightful home
Ansy Hughes fr the record has done very well for us this season, he loves it at Leeds, biggest club he will ever play for, his words
Good to see that you can name 6 of our squad by the way mate, i kow Grant Holt and thats it from yours
Big clubs will always be big clubs, small clubs will always live in Ipswich's shadow (that in itself should tell you all you need to know)
Rotherham White, in reply to your comment about the game in Salonika...
ReplyDeleteThat referee was not only banned for life by UEFA but also jailed in a Greek court of law for his part in the farce
Get your masks out, Get your masks out for the toneeeeeeeeeeeeee
ReplyDelete"Our rightful place has never been and will never ever be League 1, we have been brought down to your level simply through bad financial management practised by a board who didnt know the meaning of 'longterm'"
ReplyDeleteand that, in a nutshell, is why everybody hates leeds. you're in league 1 because you're a team of serial bottlers.
oh, just to make clear - wasn't slagging hughes off - he always put in 100% for city but was a long way from championship standard in terms of skill. genuinely looking forward to welcoming him back to CR, as are many other norwich fans.
your comment about 'only knowing grant holt' out of the norwich side really does nothing except underline the fact that you are an arrogant, unknowledgable tit. at least 6 of our first team would walk into your side at the moment (i'm thinking forster, drury, smith, russell, hoolahan and holt). i'm sure grayson would love to have doherty, lappin and both martins as well.
if only they handed out points for being a 'big club', eh, then both of our teams would have been promoted by september. unfortunately the points are given out for beating the 'tinpot' sides that are put in front of you - something which leeds don't seem to be able to do right now. norwich do. swindon do. millwall do. keep checking the rearview mirror...
I'm heartened to read a few normal comments from realistic Leeds fans.
ReplyDeleteAs a Norwich fan I am extremely happy that we are at the head of the table, but I still can't allow myself to get carried away. Football has a nasty habit of biting you on the arse, so you won't find me celebrating until we are mathematically promoted.
We too have a large portion of idiot fans (some of them appear to have made it on to here as you can now see) that keep referring to Division Three as 'Tinpot'… but the simple facts are that we are in this league because we deserve to be; we got relegated to Div 3 because we weren't good enough to stay in Div 2.
The same applies to Leeds. You do not have a god-given right to be anywhere other than right here, right now. So best you reel your neck in and behave more like the chap that posted today at 10:15, who is obviously an adult as well as proper fan.
Seriously, your comments are a perfect illustration of why so many other fans want you to fail quite miserably… myself included… so I’m hoping Millwall or Swindon take your automatic place (but behind us of course) and you fail spectacularly at Elland Road in the second leg of the play-offs – preferably against Millwall so that they can beat you on the pitch and off it too.
Oh dear, I resorted to spite against you just like everybody else, despite my not intending to. You see what emotions you stir in even the mildest of people.
Marching On Together… yeah, but where to?
Oblivion I hope!
No need to check any re-view mirrpor fella, we're on course go up up, its up to the rest to catch us
ReplyDeleteNot knowing anyone but Grant Holt is nothing to do with arrogance its because you're just another small to medium club that we've been forced to endure due to our money problems that we dont give a fuck about, no different to Millwall last season or Carlisle the season before
Long term lets see how things are going, you can blow smoke up your own arse as much as you want lad but we both know we wil be back in the premiership before you
You do however have a better owner than us, which wouldnt be hard considering Attila The Hun would be a better face for our club than Bates (the main reason we are still here)
You can hate Leeds United all you want mate, but you need to accept the fact that we will never give a fuck about you, off you pop
typical Yorkshireman attitude in the article, always bigger & better & if you've been to Tenerife they've been to Elevenarife.I've got a couple of Leeds fan friends who are two of the nicest blokes you could wish to meet & neither from Yorkshire.Had to chuckle as the Leeds idiots dismissed Southampton before the game. . .oops.
ReplyDeleteMillwall & Swindon are both better teams & I can see Norwich giving them a real spanking in a couple of weeks,I sincerely hope so.
ok, you console yourself with your huge (half-empty) stadium and overpriced season tickets (or whatever it is that defines you as a big club) while all the little 'nobody' clubs take points off you for the rest of the season. seriously - no promotion this season for leeds and i think league 2 will be a lot closer than the premier league. then you can go and patronise those teams whilst bottling a huge lead in the table.
ReplyDeleteback to the original point of the blog (sort of): surely with games against millwall, swindon and norwich coming up it's actually leeds who are facing a run of 'cup finals'?
Norwich have NEVER been anything...Your glory years include Jeremy Goss, Ruel Fox and Chris Sutton *whistles* - you're just a small town in Ipswich.
ReplyDeleteIt's better to have been someone and lost than never to have been anyone at all... Especially with 7 toes.
"Marching On Together… yeah, but where to?
Oblivion I hope!" PLAYGROUND RHETORIC. Fuck Off.
Oh dear Death, someone appears to have upset your balance. Which shoulder has your chip fallen off?
ReplyDeleteOr are you a well balanced Yorkshireman with a chip on both?

Can any of you remember what it feels like to watch your club crowned league champions??
ReplyDeleteJust us then??
Ok, carry on
Norwich Fan here.
ReplyDeleteI wish Leeds all the best and hope they do get promoted as they deserve it...always had a soft spot for Leeds and YOU are a bigger club than us. No doubt we will meet you in the Prem but for now I bid you a fond fairwell. Good Luck.
Can all the Norwich fans calm down a touch as you are really mis-representing the family nature of our club. Over and out.
Ok, I am going to sit firmly on the fence with this comment, I haven't got an interested in Keyboard Warrior Vs Keyboard Warrior games, let the football do the talking at Carrow Road... hopefully it will be a good game for football. I am a Norwich fan, I would like a Norwich win, but that would be stating the obvious.
ReplyDeleteDo some players raise their game against Leeds United? Some of them yes, particularly those who are out to try and win a big contract somewhere on the basis of the odd goal against a high profile team. That loudmouth Troy Deeney at Walsall is one of them, more interested in getting his name in the paper. Then you have teams like Leyton Orient and Exeter City, who you are quite right.... have players who may never play against a team like Leeds again.
What you fail to do is acknowledge that you are not the only big club in the division, there are 3 clubs who were playing the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham week in week out in the same season that you last played premiership football.
Leeds are a big club, of course they are, but they also have a huge number of fans who appear in denial about the current state of their club. Your club is in decline, revenues falling each year, you dont own your ground. Leeds can no longer claim to be any bigger than Southampton, Charlton or Norwich City. Each are on a level playing field, and so have the same fixed incomes (tv revenue, etc).
I judge the size of a club by its fanbase, which in turn can be judged by revenues from ticket sales, shirt & merchandise sales, and other similar incomes. This forms the basis of 'support', and the 4 clubs mentioned are a very similar size in that respect.
If I was a Leeds fan I would be very worried about the failure to arrest the decline, and I mean the decline in revenues from 'supporters', you are shrinking. Norwich would be shrinking too if we werent in for a chance of instant automatic promotion, and I am thankful that we can continue to GROW as a club. And we are a growing club by the way, we have been for the past decade. Not many clubs can boost a growing fanbase, and thats something to consider.
Please do not make the assumption that all teams are treating Elland Road like a cup final, I was there for Leeds v Norwich, and was not impressed at all by your quiet supporters, your 18000 gate, or in fact your team until Gradel came on. Norwich were playing their cup finals whilst you were failing in the championship, a victory against Man Utd was one of them. Same applies to Southampton and Charlton, please dont flatter yourselves too much. St Marys Gate is a much more impressive stadium too.
The only thing that I have against Leeds is the pure arrogance and delusions of granduer displayed by your supporters.... Elland Road does not impress me one bit, neither would it any regular at Carrow Road, perhaps you should consider visiting us in a few days.... you might be impressed.
Dear Death,
ReplyDeleteWhat was it you were saying about playground rhetoric? You can gen up below.
Rhetoric
noun
1 a form of rhetoric oratory, eloquence, command of language, way with words. See note at paralipsis .
2 empty rhetoric bombast, turgidity, grandiloquence, magniloquence, pomposity, extravagant language, purple prose; wordiness, verbosity, prolixity; informal hot air; rare fustian.
…and take that hook out of your lip before you choke on it!
Ryan - any chance you can add a brief summary?
ReplyDeleteThis a blog not a fucking broadsheet son.
I read the last two paras - and I was there for Leeds Norwich and when your fuckhead keeper kicked it to Beckford you surely were impressed with the noise of the place?
"Norwich were playing there cup finals while..." Errm hang on a minute. Outside of the past 9 years we have been playing cup finals for 50 odd years you retard.
Not sure of your point on rhetoric there.
ReplyDeleteBut if you need it defining more closely having pasted the dictionary definition in then I would go for either informal hot air or empty rhetoric...un-decided.
Now you were saying about GLORY YEARS and chips on shoulders? Are you going to answer or just keep throwing up irrantional responses?
@John - I do have a tendancy to write a little too much, granted. I am a writer though, so that comes second nature.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, and I am being absolutely honest, I wasn't impressed with the noise of the place in the slightest.
18000 fans in a 40000 seater stadium, 1500 of them Norwich. I get to see just under 26000 fans in a 26500 seater stadium every other week, sounds like you havent been to Carrow Road recently..... I dont think that any Carrow Road regular could have been impressed with the noise. It certainly wasn't any more impressive than a winning goal at Carrow Road.
I have been to a full Elland Road, very impressive, but there is nothing exciting about being an away fan stuck in a corner next to an almost completely empty lower tier... There were about 40-60 young chavs giving us a good bit of banter and the odd witty song, other than that your fans were pretty rubbish if I am honest.... Perhaps they were noiser in the pubs watching sky sports hey :/
Even my girlfriend, a west yorkshire lass who lives in west yorkshire, said that the Leeds fans were rubbish..... she did cringe at a few Norfolk accents though :p
I am however looking forward to your good away support at Carrow Road, your fans are good fun on the road, I will give you that... but at home.... "your grounds too big for you, your grounds too big for you"... best song of the night ;)
John
ReplyDelete9 years ago is not recent history mate… and there in lies everyone else's problem with you all. You used to be a big team… in the past, a decade ago and before that when your chairmen spent more on goldfish than other teams did on their entire playing budget. Oh yeah… and the time before that when you all fixed your way to the top with the help of that conniving fucker Revie or whatever the cheat was called… and you have the nerve to moan about cheating referees.
From cheating Revies to cheating Referees… did you see what I did there? Oh the irony, the irony. Are you sure you're not American?
Exactly how much sympathy are we meant to have for you?
You lived beyond your means like many, many others and now you find yourself in your rightful place. For you are where you are and even the most ignorant, bigoted tyke can recognise that surely?
"People like this are the type to get on the teams back too much and exert too much pressure. People like this are one of the reasons that we are in this league and might find ourselves still here next season.
ReplyDeleteGet real pal, we are here because we deserve to be here and can only get out of this league on merit."
See this leeds fan knows the truth! At least some of you are realistic!
say what you want tinpot shites, leeds united will always be a bigger club than yours.
ReplyDeleteand whoever said,
"I judge the size of a club by its fanbase, which in turn can be judged by revenues from ticket sales, shirt & merchandise sales, and other similar incomes. This forms the basis of 'support', and the 4 clubs mentioned are a very similar size in that respect."
go and play on a motorway you thick shite.
our fanbase is far far greater than any team in the football league, and 90% of premiership teams. what other team has had 250,000+ applications for a play off final, has sold out every single away game in this tinpot league, have been through so much shit and still travel from everywhere. we've got supporters clubs in norway, malta, dubai, all over the place!
we may have our downfalls on the pitch, but don't try and think your shite support is even 10% of ours.
now fuck off, wankers.
To Leeds
ReplyDeleteWe are coming to get you.
Much Love,
Jonathan Douglas

norwich is to the north of leeds, swindon and colchester are slightly to the south, but not far away.
ReplyDeleteoops, that's the league table, not a map - silly me!
9 years ago is not recent history mate… and there in lies everyone else's problem with you all.
ReplyDeleteWhat's your point mate?
What have Norwich ever done?
Why are you trying to align Norwich City with Leeds United? It's like comparing Apples with Pears.
The answer is you FEEL BETTER about Norwich City and Leeds United being in the same league cos it makes you FEEL GOOD.
I suggest we all come back on on May 8th and see where we are. Alternatively meet at Marrow Road and discuss?
Dear Jonathan
ReplyDeleteBring it.
Much Love,
Richard Naylor.
Ps. Leave me a kiss again and I will find you and eat you. Understood?
I have noticed that a lot of Norwich and Swinton fans have left their name as 'Anonymous'.
ReplyDeleteA great irony considering the clubs they support.
Good Luck Leeds. We need you back in the Prem and can't say the same for Norwich or Swinton. I can't even name one Swindon player EVER.

Wow, the number of non Leeds fans claiming that they "pity" us, or that we belong in League 1, or that we're arrogant, is just astounding.
ReplyDeleteLet's look at basic facts. We started the last decade top of the Premier League, with a young squad. We were doing well in Europe against the odds, and we were getting more or less 40,000 week in week out.
Fast forward a decade - the same team are playing in League 1, against the likes of Exeter City, Swindon Town, Leyton Orient, Wycombe Wanderers... it is clear to see that we don't "belong" in this division. A neutral who knew nothing about football could look at Leeds' home attendances, take into account the ridiculous pricing (which by the way is the only reason we aren't top of the attendance charts - £27 for a seat behind the goal against Oldham on a Tuesday night...), Leeds' stadium, Leeds' history - it's obvious that this a club who are massively underachieving, and that it is only a matter of time before they begin to rise again.
If you're honest with yourself, you can't claim to "pity" Leeds. We don't really need your faked "pity" - when you claim to pity us, what you are in fact trying to do is convince yourself that you aren't a tiny bit jealous. We all do it - I'm sure a lot of Leeds fans would claim to pity Soccer Club United of Manchesters fanbase, which consists of middle eastern kids and Londoners - but we're still jealous of their success.
Arrogant? Well, yes. We're the biggest club in the division, if not the Football League. Some of us probably think we could get into Europe in the next 5 years. But you're the ones who fuel our arrogance. Seeing "WE ALL H8 LEEDZ SCUM!! AHAHA!" makes me feel a little happier inside. Why do you hate us exactly? We have no history with most clubs in League 1, it's unlikely that most Leeds fans have ever met a supporter of Swindon Town or Walsall - yet you decide to try and form some sort of rivalry with us?! Every time an opposing fan of a League 1 side speaks of their undying hatred for Leeds, it just inflates our ego a bit more - you're jumping on the bandwagon of people who think that we honestly care if they don't like us. We don't want to be liked.
And as for a club in decline - well, that's hardly true. We've turned things round, and in fact since we went into administration, we've gradually improved. We've got a young squad, a potentially huge fanbase - there's life in us yet.
Anyway, rant over. Go back to your own blog, and stop pretending to hate us.
So who are you Kev? Are you Kev or are you Anonymous?
ReplyDeleteAnd I wouldn't make too many assumptions about your Premiership status for too much longer either.
One year away from that gravy train of the *ahem* Champions League * cough, cough and you might be smirking on the other side of your face.
Let's be honest, the only thing you admire about the Yorkshire boys is their violent hatred of Man U… fact!
Right boys. I've got to go to work. That's another Southern custom I'm sure you Northern lads are unaware of. Work! Remember that do you?
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your love-in with The Scousers… but watch out for your hub caps eh. (Jeez, its got to be a low point when the Scousers are your only friends… eh? Calm down etc etc).
Ta ra!
It's been uplifting. Unlike your recent form!
@John - 9 years ago? Not sure which calender you work on, but Norwich City were in the premier league beating Manchester United in 2005. Leeds were in the championship failing.
ReplyDeleteI would rather eat my own poop then meet with a Leeds fan at Carrow Road to discuss ancient history, I wasn't born when Leeds were good, you were alright under O'Leary but paid through the roof for it, and lost your dignity when you cost your local community millions of pounds through the administrators.
If 9 years is too much history for you, then Don Revie is too much history than you. If you want to talk about history then how about this....Norwich City, down in the third tier for the first time in 50 years, never been in administration, owned their own ground and top class training facilities for the duration.
If you want to talk about the present, then.... Norwich City, 19500 season ticket holders in the third division, £23m of honest debt, never cost another business a penny, a striker who has scored the same number of league goals as Jermaine Beckford this year, a former champions league winner as manager, former celtic chief executive McNally at the helm recommended by Martin O'Neill, owners who do not remain anonymous, a ground valued at £34.5m (therefore fully solvent), 50000 shirts sold per year, 7 points clear at the top of league one, most points out of any professional English team, most goals scored out of any professional English team, highest average attendance in League One, a higher average attendance than 7 premiership teams, a higher average attendance than all but 2 Championship teams. All this despite having people being turned away for tickets.
You are quite right, Leeds has a bigger fanbase than Norwich. Leeds are the 9th most supported team in the UK, Norwich are the 17th most supported. Shame that none of them bother to buy season tickets or shirts then hey? The company accounts of the respective clubs show this clearly, Leeds 'fans' are often not 'fans' at all, what kind of fan doesnt turn up at Elland Road?
If you want to make it recent, then everything points to us being a bigger club than Leeds currently. History is irrelevant, you pointed this out yourself before being contradictory.
Yes Leeds are a bigger club than most and of course teams up the game but thats more to do with league position now than the club stature.Whenever a team is top of the league or close the smaller teams want to prove a point don't they? No different to Swindon being beaten by Bristol rovers, hartlepool and Gillingham shall we say that it was because we are the bigger club that they upped the game? No it happens because when you play better players you tend to step up a level anyway.
ReplyDeleteHope Leeds Norwich and ourselves (swindon) go up either way
At the end of December, Leeds were 6 points clear at the top with a game in hand.
ReplyDelete18 points ahead of "little" Swindon.
Now you are only 5 points clear of third with 3-4 teams waiting to pounce as you continue to drop points because you're not as good as you think you are.
Good luck for the rest of the season and next season in League One.
STFC
I am Kev. That's why I left my name.
ReplyDeleteWe will be in the Premiership and above Norwich/Swindon (whichever one you are) forever more. Even if your clubs merged you wouldn't have enough fans/money etc to compete.
You're forgetting Leeds were smashed to bits by Ridsdale, Liverpool may struggle with the Yanks but there will always be a spirit amongst the fans, a kindred spirit between the clubs - something that you clubs will never understand. It doesn't sit at the heart of your football clubs. I don't know why it doesnt but there isn't a spirit or a heart at Norwich/Swindon.
Leeds and Liverpool have a great rivalry and a great respect for one another. Always have, Always will. Yes, we both hate the Mancs but it's more of a respect from the 70s, 80s and 90s and the 'fun' we have had as supporters.
So sit down Norwich/Swindon. You just 'don't get it' and I can't explain it - its too big to explain.

Leeds are in League one.
Liverpool are in the Premiership.
They won't be playing each other for many years unless it's a cup game.

Such eloquence, how old are you son, clearly one of the 14 year old spotty hoodies who tried to intimidate us at your majestic stadium, until we met outside and you ran home to your mummies. Enjoy Swindon, it must be such fun living in that massive Wiltshire town, no wonder you have nothing better to do that support a club that has never & will never be more than a little town team. Must go, got to go to dinner in our City, with a woman, take care sonny xx

I just read this blog... here an interesting theory for ya.
ReplyDeleteIm a Norwich Fan.
But in the 70's I used to be a Leeds Fan... why did I change.
Well I was in school in the 70's and like all other rural kids...we used to pick teams from match of the day to support.
There were Man U kids...Chelsea kids...liverpool kids.....Aresenal kids.. but hardly no Norwich supporting kids... why?
Well we all lived 30 miles from Norwich... and as 7/8/9 year olds and were hardly aware of NCFC. Unless you watched the local news you never saw Norwich.
In secondary school and afterwards, we all became more aware, and being a Norfolk lad I started supporting the local team.
However, most of the Man U, Leeds, Liverpool, Chesea etc etc contnued to support these teams hundreds of miles away... ?
why did I change? Easy answer... I grew up. The rest of the above so called supporters of non local teams never did.
In fact most the the thick local inbreds actually do not support Norwich... they continue to support so called big teams they picked as a 7/8/9 year old.
Yes... that includes Leeds, although most of them now are 50ish, probably been to Elland Road or Old Trafford etc a couple o times in their life.
But things have changed greatly here in the past couple of decades.
Norwich City heavily promoted Football in the community and now most youngsters support City, and the support is immense.
NCFC is a single county club and Carrow Road is heavily oversubscribed, which is why it is the avaerage gate is 95% of capacity.
Thats why seaon ticket sales are over 18,000 for next year(although only just slightly higher than this year at the mo.) And as high as when were in the prem 5 years ago.
So now what has happened is City has all the youthful support, and all the 40/50 year old numpties still support Man U, Liverpool, Leeds, etc etc. (and take their Norwich supporting kids to Carrow road)
I read most other teams sites/ forums. I happened to notice a comment on Waccoe a while back about the lack of young supportters at Elland Road.... well wonder why eh peeps.
It seems most of your great support is in fact the local inbreds from all over the country who never grew up.... mostly about 50 years old now.... bet if you did a survey, that would be the most common age for a Leeds suporter.
Oh yeh and another thing...
ReplyDeleteI always ask one question of numpties who support out of areas teams that they have supported since they were 7 years old.
"Suppose you'll be supporting Brazil in the world cup this year again then...."
They always answer ... "No way... England.. I'm English"
"Um... so just explain to me why exactly is it you support a team 300 miles away then, when you absolutely no connection to them?"
Answer is allways same.... "I supported them since I was 7,8 or 9 years old."
Now I'm sure you don't fall into this category Mr Dirty Leeds.
Live in Swindon, born in Leeds. Hard to imagine... moving eh? No stay where you were born, support local team, marry sister, father children with 7 fingers:-)
ReplyDeletePS lets be 'avin yer - go Delia

god id love it if leeds bottled it again. so what if you have more support just means that you have 14,000 more idiots than the rest of us.
ReplyDeleteSwindon White...
ReplyDeletePricks like you are a laughing stock who just turn out once a year to watch the nearest game possible...real mickey mouse muppetts.
As for the Brentford fan anyone who has a motorway looking over the home end cant really seriously go round calling Swindon a dump...the best thing to come out of Brentford is the M4 West.
As for the original post after beating Leeds 3-0 i think we went on a substantial unbeaten run so it wasnt our cup final..........Leeds support at Swindon was pathetic probably due to the fact that most of em dont come from Leeds and dont realise what supporting a team means.
Nice to see Stevenage doing well this season also...Barrow away feels me with dread.
On a constructive note the arrogance of Beckford is going to cost Leeds..they should have got rid when he made it clear he wasnt going to stay....a BIG club would have fired him out the door.
Love all the responses from the fans of other clubs in our league, all searching for Leeds United sites! lol
