Dirty Leeds Verdict – Bradley Johnson

Share

As Leeds/Bradford’s Air Traffic Control Officer’s breathed a collective sigh of relief last week, at the news that Bradley Johnson has rejected the club’s latest offer of a contract extension, it seems The White Army’s opinion is a little more split.

Whilst browsing Twitter over the last 10 days or so you’d think Lord Mawhinney had deducted Leeds some more points, such was the outcry after Bradley “One average game in Ten” Johnson decided he wasn’t accepting the club’s offer of a new deal.

Now immediately fans will point to our infamously tight-fisted owner as to the reason that Leeds don’t compete enough financially to keep one of our young players, but presumably the club wouldn’t break the wage structure for him. Bradley played a leading role last season (I would argue more out of necessity as opposed to his performances meriting) so it’s a safe bet that Simon Grayson regards him as a first team player. Therefore, the club can’t possibly have offered him a reserve team wage or the wage of a fringe player working his way up the ladder. One can only assume that Bradley wanted to be one of the top earners (if not the top earner) at the club.

For those that complain about our lack of spending, please feel free to justify how a player who has seldom done anything on a football pitch that I’d feel was beyond me, can command a wage higher than that of Becchio, Gradel, Snodgrass or even Howson….

For what it’s worth, my opinion hasn’t changed since I first wrote on the subject back in November;

Leeds held to ransom by most deluded ‘star’ in club’s history.

Lets approach one of the craziest stories released by Leeds United’s press officer in recent memory; MIDFIELDER TRANSFER LISTED appeared on NewsNow this afternoon, the initial fear of what, or whom the article could be referring to quickly subsided upon clicking the headline. Thankfully, Robert Snodgrass, Max Gradel and Neil Kilkenny are all staying put and even Andy Hughes will remain at Elland Road… I can hear you thinking, “well who else is there!?!”

It turns out Bradley Johnson has rejected the club’s final offer of a 3 year contract.

Firstly, I’d have to question Simon Grayson’s thinking in offering Johnson another contract, never mind a 3 year deal!  For me, Bradley Johnson will always epitomise the ‘average’ players that have passed through the door at Thorp Arch since our decline to League One. He is by far the most infuriating player I have ever seen play, he obviously has some talent but it is totally undermined by his lack of vision, awareness and terrible decision making. I was hoping he would leave in the Summer on a free, so any sort of transfer fee would be a bonus!

Quite what goes through the head of some players is a mystery. Perhaps his agent has pointed to the amount of games he has started this season and that his wage should reflect that of an important first team member… he has obviously forgotten the game at Boundary Park a couple of years ago when Bradley turned in the worst performance of any professional footballer I have witnessed. Can anybody think of anything Johnson has done this season that would look out of place in an amateur game at your local park? Even his decent finish and steady game against Hull was undone by a comical own goal due to lack of concentration.

Out of the whole squad, I can’t think of a player who I would be less upset or concerned about leaving.

I’m sure he’ll find his rightful place back in League One again before long…

It has now come to light that Mr Johnson is off to Norwich City to play Premiership football next season (no, seriously). Presumably Paul Lambert saw his goal against Arsenal and the expiry date on his contract and took a gamble. For any Canaries reading this, you are getting a player who is very athletic but with zero pace, has good aerial ability and rarely gets injured but all that is totally undermined by a lack of vision and composure…

  2. But he needs to be in a decent team, with a decent manager, and quality fans, like us lot at ncfc! Both him and snodgrass will be happy here, enjoy their football here more, which in turn will give better performances, Lambert gets the best out of everyone eventually

  3. I think you may well change your view once BJ is playing for your lot. He was lucky to be at Leeds in the first place and it was only the Chairman's tight-fisted transfer spending policy that saw BJ come to Leeds. He most certainly has not 'set the house of fire' with his performances, hence the reason for not matching his inflated wages claim. Watch out for his clumsy tackling giving away free-kicks and collecting 'stupid' Yellow Cards.

Just hope Paul Lambert is not daft enough to give him a 3 or 4 year contract.

  4. dear oh dear... Norwich City? straight back down again, and shows that Bradders is purely in it for the money, or at best to showcase himself to other PL teams, dont expect a Norwich Stalwart, and dont expect Snodgrass to go to a tinpot outfit like Norwich.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Tinpot outfit like Norwich, be carefull, they were not that far behind us in attendeces last season and as for showcasing yourself, it wouldn't be the worst choice for Snodgrass! Football is a fickle buisiness.

  6. If Snodders was that bothered about playing for premire giants norwich he would of put a transfer request in by now,if you do sign johnson becareful when your at morrisons next to carrow road, putting your shopping away he might hit you with one of his quality shots

  7. Johnson is probably one of the worst players I have ever seen turn out for Leeds and I have been watching them for over 40 years....

    Premier League? Haha

    ReplyDelete
  8. Shocked that lambert has gone for a player like BJ
Average championship player at best and will get found out at prem level.Cant see snoddy going to a team that will struggle in the prem.

  9. Johnson to Naarwich. Good, I'll drive him down myself.

  10. Its only papertalk at the moment, hopefully he won't end up at Norwich....

  11. Johnson will fit in well at Norwich, there shit too!

    ReplyDelete
  12. BJ I couldnt think of a better nickname because hes not even worth one of them and if he was his shooting would be well off target --- and his dribbling isnt much better ha

    ReplyDelete
  13. "Johnson will fit in well at Norwich, there shit too!"

To be fair Norwich have finished above Leeds or been in a higher division since 2006/7 and attract a very similiar level of support. So not the brightest of comments there.

I personally dont think Lambert is looking for the bloke to start every game this season. We need greater depth in central midfield and he would be an improvement on some of the squad players we have who are absolutely terrible. Yes I am looking at you Owain Tudur Jones and Stephen Hughes.

    ReplyDelete
  14. So happy he has gone, only because of the lack of money that we were forced to watch that crap for so long.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Norwich are meant to be Premier League, yes they were lucky last season. Johnson I'm afraid is Division 1 standard at best, and has a terrible attitude to boot...

    ReplyDelete
  16. To be fair Norwich deserve to be up there, as do we (one day!) have to say though BJ is a strange one for them, really thought a Sheffield Wenesday more his level in all honesty.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'd rather be lucky and in the Premier League, than average and in the Championship!

-And it wasn't luck. When something like scoring in the last 6 minutes of games, 12 times, it's called 'skill' and 'determination'.

As for signing Johnson, he'll be nothing more than cover,a bench warmer; unlike his time at Leeds which saw him as a starter. And if your comments of Johnson are valid, then what does that say about the quality and depth of Leeds, or the managerial choices?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Why are Norwich fans so deluded, when we go up we will go up champions, maybe not next season or the season after, but we will.Norwich will struggle and will bottom dwellers in their first term back, good luck to em, they will need it.

    ReplyDelete
  19. You can't compare Norwich attendance to Leeds without taking into account season tickets prices which are 25% cheaper at Norwich - Leeds are a much bigger club

    ReplyDelete
  20. Deluded fans...? Go up as Champions...? Oh, the irony...

    ReplyDelete
  21. A reasonable free transfer for a championship club, but surely not a premiership team. Norwich fans should be concerned at this signing because he will get murdered playing against quality midfielders every week.
Good luck to BJ because he has earned his pay day, and I reckon Bates treated him like crap back in January.
I don't see the point in slagging off the lad, but he simply ain't good enough for Leeds and with him leaving gives Grayson a chance to bring in better quality.

    ReplyDelete
  22. But he was good enough for leeds... He played quite a lot for you, didn't he? Probably too good (snigger). Play off challenge next season? Ha! Replace him with what? Oh yeah, all the money from selling Snodgrass for 4m. Deluded, deluded, deluded... Wise up - the league will be harder next season. Mid table mediocrity.

    ReplyDelete
  23. At the end of the day,if he doesn't want to play for Leeds best he goes. Look how Becchio filled Beckfords place, someone will do the same in BJ's case.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Deluded fans? ... um WACCOE???

Go up as Champions? ... you mean like we did in league 1, when the 'great' Leeds United bottled it?

Sour grapes from bitter fans, i'd say.

Enjoy another season of mediocrity won't you?

    OTBC!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Johnson is coming in as cover which surely even you lot can see that, if he is so poor then why are established PL clubs looking at him like Sunderland and WestBrom? Tbf you lot have watched him all season and i have seen him only a number of times, but he never looked a poor player to me. Anyways best of luck to you guys in the championship next season, its going to be a toughie

    ReplyDelete
  26. If he doesn't want to play then let him go, no point having someone who clearly doesn’t want to be here.
One average game in 10 plus a lot of disciplinary problems at Leeds, stupid last minute bookings, not turning up on time for training that kind of thing, arguments with the manager, and not keeping appointments, scores one great goal against Arsenal and thinks he can play in the premiership, good luck Bradley, hope you succeed at the Budgies, your going to need it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. to anonymouse norwich fan even if mid table and you in prem we will still be a massive a club than you

  28. Suck seed at the Budgies! Ha! Nice one... OTBC!

  29. Been a Leeds fan working near Hull I had to endure all those sorts of comments when Hull City got promoted, believe me the euphoria doesn't last long when you getting thrashed every week. Even us Leeds fans 2 leagues down were having a happier season than the Hully Gullys.

    ReplyDelete
  30. But at least we can give it a shot! Maybe, just maybe... West Brom, Wolves, Newcastle, Stoke... All went up with average sides and made a fist of it. You have to be in it to, erm, stay in it! Ha! OTBC

  31. "when we go up we will go up champions, maybe not next season or the season after, but we will.."

Classic case of pipe smoking, and to be honest, this is text book denial.

But I have to admire the determination. It's like watching a four year old determined to reach the cookie jar on the top shelf..."maybe not this year, or next year, or the year after, but some year, I'll reach that cookie jar".

I equate the feelings of being a Leeds football fan as someone who requests a Russian wife online, only to find that upon delivery, it's a guy.

So sad.."maybe not next season or the season after, but we will.." Of course you will....eventually.

    ON THE BALL CITY!!!!!!

  32. bradleys crap and he can take killkenny with him every one blamed defence was them two not covering 10 moments of bj 1 decent goal 9 trailing 5 yards behind his man

    ReplyDelete
  33. Fair play to Norwich,, good team and a good manager but johnson is average at best and wouldnt be good enough even as cover at prem level. Yes he started at Leeds but we had no defensive midfield cover at all and he a job. He will be found out at premiership level no doubt. Worth a punt for a free? Possibly, but dont expect much.

  42. Best get a comment in, before teacher comes back!

The difference between Leeds and Norwich last season was the amount of goals we conceded... we had no problem scoring. No matter which players played in the back 4 or indeed in goal we always looked shaky. Perhaps that can be attributed to a weak holding player in front of them...

  48. I wasn't going to post on here, but I am so wound up with some of the Leeds fans comments that I feel they need to be put back in their place, and get some green and yellow education (which will hopefully make them appreciate our fine club, and realise we will not necessarily go back down!)

Ok so you were a big club around 10 years ago, and yes you did get into Europe, but that doesn’t mean you still have the right to call yourself a big club, and dictate to other clubs whether they are a smaller club than yours.

Furthermore does league position not count more than being a big club? Look at QPR, their ground should be more accustomed to league 1 yet they have managed to get into the PL, even when they were top of the league and only averaging crowds of around 16,000. Other teams like Sunderland etc. might not have as much history as Leeds does, but they are successfully maintaining themselves as a good side in the Premier League.

Sometimes as a football fan you have to sit back and actually appreciate what has been achieved by another club, and the whole arrogance thing is not needed. Maybe it is because of what happened in League 1 last year, maybe its because you narrowly missed out on the playoffs this year, but how you can call us 'little old Norwich' and a 's*#t hole' is beyond me. It is by far the nicest city I have ever visited, and for those who disagree I suggest you look into how many ex Norwich players decide to live here once they retire. Plus the whole 'inbred' thing is getting boring now, can you not think of any other more original insults to throw? I have been 'up North' several times, and I must suggest that you start the whole inbreeding process, we have such nicer looking girls here!

I don’t follow much football outside Carrow Road, but what I do know is that Paul Lambert, and this whole club, is something special.

Let’s start with the fans, our ground currently holds 27,000 and next year (this was before we were guaranteed promotion) we had over 20,000 season ticket applications. All throughout last year tickets were like gold dust, basically if you were a 'casual' fan then you had zero chance of getting a ticket. That shows massive support, even during the dark days of 3-4 years ago where we were at the bottom end of the championship, we were still getting 23,000 every week. Most teams also comment on how friendly we are (might like to take a look at one of our forums, you may be surprised that we don’t swear after every other word) and the good atmosphere we create.

Now onto the board. They have publicly stated that they are going to back Paul and his team with whatever money it takes to keep up us. Our chef executive, David McNally has also stated that we will not get relegated. This shows massive ambition by the club, everyone knows about the debts we have, and to push the boat out as much as they promise to (give Lambert £40 million if he wants it) is fantastic. Also if we are relegated, it doesn’t mean the be all and end all of our club. The board created a 7 year plan (which we are already 3 years ahead of) at the end of which we would be a fully established Premier League side.

The team that got us promoted really demonstrates to me what the ‘ideal’ footballing side is. Our team did not have any 'massive stars' (albeit by the end of the season they could have been classed as this) and their fantastic team spirit at times was an unexplainable experience to watch. Many people believe that the fashion in which we won some games was 'lucky', but from where I was sitting there was nothing lucky about it. Lambert simply had his players 'playing to the final whistle', because (if you don’t realise) football is played over 90 minutes and can be won in the first second or with the last kick.

    ReplyDelete
  49. ^^continued from above

Now on to Lambert. He is undoubtedly the best young manager out there; you just need to look at his win ratio to see this. When his team is not on top of their game he has the ability to change things around often with Norwich being the winning team. He gets his players to play for him, and has a fantastic relationship with them (he can have a laugh, yet at the same time can make sure they know if they have done something wrong). His composure in interviews is also something that other managers could take note on, he is always 'playing things down' to take the pressure off the players, and he never criticises his team in public.

Finally on to the main topic of this whole blog, and the debate over whether Bradley is good enough for the Premier League or not. Paul has this ability to see player’s potential when others can’t, and that’s part of the reason why I feel that he will get the most out of Johnson. For example, our goalkeeper Ruddy was slated at the beginning of the season, there were many who wrote him off after the first 10 games. The same happened with Simeon Jackson. However Ruddy soon found his composure and was a brick wall in goal for us, and Jackson found his goal scoring form and fired in 9 goals in 7 games or something like that.

Because Lambert finds gems from the lower league, players who are desperate to prove themselves on a higher level than they currently play, I really believe we have a chance of staying up, and perhaps even pushing higher up the table. Football is a team game, and that is exactly what Lambert has produced/is producing.

  52. Norwich were promoted on merit, although I still think there are far better teams in the championship that threw promotion away. Hull City have a similar size fan base and proved that a small club can not compete financially with the bigger sides and paid the price for trying.
Personally I don't have any strong opinion towards them either way, but fully expect them to get relegated next season.
I rate Lambert as a manager and he will be snapped up by a 'big club' pretty quickly.
Leeds are still paying the price of years of mismanagement but have one of the largest most passionate fan bases in the country and we will be back competing for honours when we get rid of Bates.

  53. The day that any fan comments on 'how nice' we are a Leeds fans, is the day I hand my season ticket back. If away fans enjoy trips to Elland Road, we're all doing something wrong...

    ReplyDelete
  54. Unfortunately there is an awful lot of b*$$*£& on this thread, particularly from so-called Leeds fans, most of whom could not pass the Balcombe Test. The original post was nothing to do with whether Leeds, is a bigger club than Norwich blah blah blah, how so called football fans get sidetracked into spouting twaddle is a sad indictment of our wonderful education system.

Paul Lambert has done a great job at Norwich and his greatest test so far now awaits him and his team. There is no reason why Norwich cannot stay up next season, outside of top 5/6 clubs the rest are pretty 'average'. Get a decent start and avoid injuries and suspensions then you are in with a chance. Often it is the 2nd season which finds you out. Good luck to Norwich, Swansea and QPR next season.

Norwich have been this way before under Mike Walker only for it all to turn sour, it is even harder these days to compete and establish a club in the Premiership Top 10, as Leeds will find out if we are good enough to get promoted, so enjoy while you can.

As for Bradley Johnson I stand by my earlier post where I said "Just hope Paul Lambert is not daft enough to give him a 3 or 4 year contract". BJ is the classic 'badge kisser' until his agent tells him he can make more money elsewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  55. well well im sure Bj will be motivated to prove you all wrong next season.... footballers do have access to the internet you know....sometimes all this online slagging is self defeating :o)

Yes im a leeds fan, good luck to norwhich, well run club but sorry, your on another planet if you think your bigger than Leeds United. Give us a new owner and things will start to take shape.........prays

    ReplyDelete
  56. Some of the leeds fans on here are making the rest of us leeds fans like muppets! Norwich have a good set up, although i do expect them to take the wooden spoon next year. Bradley johnson was steady away, but we can do much better if we had a chairman who wasn't trying to run leeds as an atm.
Good luck to norwich and lets hope bates spends some of the moey he has robbe from leeds

    ReplyDelete
  57. oh i can not believe what i am reading, if you look at our games last season playing with out bj you will see just how important he is, if he wouldnt have been suspended we would be in the pl next season, when ilook whats going off at other clubs, i must say i am very worried, even the likes of derby are spending, ive seen leeds after one player, a doncaster player, a doncaster defender, didnt doncaster have one off the worst defence this season?strange not only that ive seen him play and hes an average sunday pub player. as long as bates owns leeds we will never make it back to where we belong, i think we will struggle next season, good look norwich, n beat the scum for us

    ReplyDelete
  58. johnson was an `ok' player, good luck to him at Norwich, but we wont miss him, we've saved £16K a week now hes gone and a further £10K a week for kilkenny, thats a reasonable amount of dough for a decent replacement even if they are a free.

I read the inordinately long post by the disgruntled Norwich fan, to all we arrogant leeds supporters, all i'll say is that form is temporary, class is permanent.

We wont always labour under a parsimonious chairman, and are a good investment with a huge (global) fanbase, with all respect Norwich arent. Well done for getting promoted, our current muppets fizzled out too soon, and key amongst them was bradley.

Leeds will be back sooner rather thn later, and cherry picking all norwich, wigans, blackpool and co's best players as they sink back to the bottom of the pond.

    ReplyDelete
  59. This is a reply to post No 6 after my post. It,s not about Snodgrass putting in a transfer it,s about Pappa eccepting a decent offer for him, which he surely would. Norwich have a good a chance as any promoted club of competing , saying they will come staight back down is like saying Birmingham will go straight back up. Ask any Boro fan about that theory. Good luck to Bradley and please somebody come and rescue us from Bates, can,t see us promoted with him at the helm.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Well Im a Leeds fan and here is how I see it.
Good luck to Norwich. You went up because you had more balls than us and were able to hold on and win games when we could not.
Had Leeds been promoted we would have needed a virtually new Team to compete seriously in the Premiership and if we had maintained the bulk of the current squad then survival is the best we would have hoped for. Another season for us in the Championship is fine by me. We need to be playing like a Team who will be worth a damn in the Premiership before we go up. This season will be Graysond acid Test and Bates ( now he has revealed himself as the owner) should be obliged to support him with some intelligent signings. Don't laugh at Norwich for picking up BJ on a Free. How many freebies have we picked up over the last few years? Some work , some don't. FINALLY, Leeds are and will always be a BIG Club and Norwich will not. This is a pure fact based on our huge fan base around the world.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Leeds are a massive club, and one of the most supported in the UK. However this does not give us any divine rite to promotion or success. Shrewd management and investment does, well done Norwich on both counts. I would love to see Leeds back, but with our current squad (and chairman) then i think we have found our level. we would get slaughtered in the premiership, let's build for a year or two more and come back with a fighting chance. As for all this distasteful banter, it really is silly. I once shagged a girl from Norwich, she was stunning, clever and witty...shame she had 6 toes but the three tits were handy.

    ReplyDelete
  62. yeah good luck norwich,if bj does go then good luck to him too,i'm sorry but Leeds are a bigger club,we have scum united 40 miles away and city nicking our home grown boys, sheff utd and weds 30 miles south, hull, doncaster barnsley, your catchment area you have none apart from ipswich,to be fair u should be pulling 45000 a match, and you were very very lucky last season, everything went for you, every decision, even against Leeds at carrow road you fouled casper and the goal was given, but good luck your gona need it !!

    ReplyDelete
  63. To the poster above, Norwich should pull in 45,000 but unfortunately we only have a ground of 27,000 so have no way of fitting these fans in. At our promotion parade we had 50,000 + fans turn up.

Ah come on, nothing was lucky last year, we made our own luck in a way. For example not every decision went for us, I will show you two occasions where they clearly didn't or it may seem to the simple mind that we did have some luck.
    1) Reading v Norwich - on SKY, Norwich 3-0 up within the space of 35 minutes. Holt put in a tackle, some young referee who was commanding his 2nd professional game sent him off. Watch the replays if you want, it was not a sending off. Norwich end up drawing 3-3.
    2) Norwich v Derby - game was at 1-1. Extra time and Norwich pushing for that extra goal, Robbie Savage taken off, which he milks and practically crawls off. Referee adds this time on and Norwich score with the last kick, which incidentally wouldn't have happened if Savage had not wasted time.

As you can see in both accounts we were not lucky in the way you may perceive us to be. To say that Norwich were lucky to go up is being seriously narrow minded.

If you don't think Norwich will stay up, I suggest you read my lengthy post above to see the many reasons why we will. But then again I don't expect you to be able to fully comprehend what I have written, it seems that my intellectual post has gone above many of your most intelligent Leeds fans.....

  64. to you mr norwich post alot above who realy needs to get out more, all i know is Gradel destroyed you on that right side in both games last season, what are norwich gona do in prem with likes of Lennon,Downing,Baines,Walcott, ashley young running at you, better players than Gradel, don't question my fellow leeds supporters we have been through more as fans than little norwich will ever do !
